Travelling to Leeds by car might seem like an easy task but give yourself plenty of time and be prepared for delays. The M62 (between M621 junction 27 to Leeds and the M606 to Bradford) is now the fourth most congested bit of motorway in Britain - that includes well-known hotspots like the M25 and M6.

The figures come from Trafficmaster the company that operates the congestion monitoring system.

A “top ten” league table shows that both the M62 and M1 have been steadily climbing. If you still want to risk it here are the routes to take into Leeds.

From the South:
Using the M1: Follow the M1 north and enter Leeds on the M621 following signs for The City Centre.

Using the A1: Follow the A1 north and join the M62 westbound. Then join the M1 northbound at J.29 and enter Leeds on the M621 following signs for “City Centre”.

From the North:
Using the M1/A1: Follow the M1/A1 south. Join the A64 (Leeds-York Road) into Leeds and follow the signs for “City Centre”.

From the West:
Follow the M62 eastbound and enter Leeds on the M621 (J.27) following signs for 'city centre'
