GO ART GALLERIES IN LEEDS
*
*

If you enjoy seeing things from a different perspective Leeds has a wide range of art galleries, offering everything from fine art and watercolours to modern art involving old milk cartons and deceased frogs. If you’re a culture vulture, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

The Leeds City Art Gallery [map] is probably Leeds’ most famous and respected gallery. Centrally located at The Headrow, the City Gallery aims to “awaken your senses” with its many collections of watercolours, paintings, sculptures and traditional prints. This gallery boasts some of the most outstanding works of British art outside of London.

Next door to the City Gallery is the famous Henry Moore Institute [map], a unique resource devoted exclusively to sculpture, with a programme comprising exhibitions, collections and research. The centre was established by the Henry Moore Foundation as a partnership with Leeds City Council in 1982.

Staying in The Headrow, a less grand but equally impressive gallery space can be found at Artspace [map], part of Leeds Central Library. This gallery provides a great insight into the minds of local artists and offers a range of exhibits from digital prints to film installations.

Another gallery in the city centre is the Leeds University Gallery [map], in Woodhouse Lane, that offers a programme of exhibitions as well as a permanent collection room given over to the display of selected items from the University art collection. The collection was gathered together over more than 100 years and is of particular appeal to those interested in 17th century art, ceramics and photographs.

Meanwhile Leeds Metropolitan University [map] based at Calverley Street, is home to regular multimedia exhibits and provides a great opportunity to witness the work of visual artists of the future.

If you enjoy contemporary art is more your style Artco [map], Meanwood Close, stages regular fine art exhibitions and has access to a full range of limited edition prints as well as offering custom picture framing services.

Moving out of town Browns Gallery of Otley is one of the leading picture galleries in the area. It supplies pictures of modern art, stocking both original and limited edition prints by artists such as David Shepherd and Kaye Boyce as well as many local, national and international artists. If you’re looking to purchase art, Browns is an ideal place to begin. As well as selling art and collectable items it also offers a bespoke framing service.

If you’re keen to see the efforts of regional artists, then a visit to The Brahm Building [map], 9a Alma Road, Headingley, is a must with its ever-changing programme of exhibitions by regional artists.

But if you’re looking for something more unusual, a visit to Horsforth and The Art & Design Gallery should be high on your list. Opposite the Horsforth railway station, The Art & Design Gallery has built up a reputation for, in particular, its permanent exhibition area of kiln formed glass by Paul Mazza, who’s own studio is located next door to the gallery.

And heading out of the city altogether, you'll find one of the regions true hidden delights: the West Yorkshire Sculpture Park [map], at Bretton Hall, Wakefield. Next to University College Bretton Hall, the park has hundreds of acres of land on which to display changing work from some of the world’s most respected sculptors. The Sculpture Park provides a great educational day out for all the family.

A little further afield is Salts Mill [map], located in Shipley, Saltaire, West Yorkshire. This huge gallery is home to a permanent exhibition of David Hockney art. The Mill has 3 public floors of massive space, which have been converted from the original wool textile mill, into a world of art, music, books, flowers, shops, and a laid-back inviting attitude.
